Roof, wind & storm claims
full repair, not a patch.

Nor'easters, wind events, and storms tear roofs open and put water into the floors below. These claims turn into fights about wear-and-tear versus wind, and patch versus replace. We document the storm's work and make the case for a real repair.

What your policy may owe

The full scope of a roof, wind & storm damage claim

Coverage varies by policy — this is what we look for, document, and pursue when it applies. The claim you file should be as complete as the loss you suffered.

Documented & pursued
  • 01Wind-created openingsWind damage to the roof covering and the water that entered through it — the storm's full chain of damage, documented as one loss.
  • 02Repair vs. replacementWhen a roof can't be honestly repaired to its pre-loss condition — matching, system integrity, manufacturer requirements — replacement is the right scope, and the claim should say so.
  • 03Interior damageCeilings, insulation, walls, and floors below the opening. Interior water damage is part of the storm loss, not a separate afterthought.
  • 04Emergency tarping & mitigationCovering the roof fast is a covered emergency cost — and a policy duty. Keep every invoice.
  • 05NYC access costsScaffolding, sidewalk protection, and access logistics in New York are real line items that suburban pricing models miss.
  • 06Flat roofs, parapets & skylightsThe city's flat-roof housing stock — membranes, parapets, coping, skylights — needs to be scoped by someone who understands how these assemblies actually fail.
Where these claims get shorted

We worked the carrier side. We know where the money goes missing.

Our adjuster spent years handling property claims from inside the carrier's process. On roof, wind & storm damage losses, these are the patterns we watch for.

"That's wear and tear"

The most common storm-claim dispute: the carrier attributes wind damage to age. Dated photos, weather data, and a careful damage pattern analysis push back.

The patch estimate

Spot repairs that can't restore the roof system leave you with a compromised roof and a closed claim. Scope should follow what repair genuinely requires.

Interior split from the cause

When interior water damage gets separated from the roof opening that caused it, pieces of the loss quietly disappear. It's one storm, one claim.

Timing matters

The first days decide the claim

No countdown clocks, no pressure — just how claims actually work. Early documentation is the difference between what happened and what gets paid.

Notice deadlines are real

Most policies require prompt notice of a loss. Delay alone can complicate coverage — the clock starts at the damage, not when you get around to it.

Evidence degrades fast

Water migrates, mold can begin within 24–48 hours, smoke residue etches surfaces — and repairs made before documentation erase the proof.

The carrier's file forms early

Reserves and first impressions get set in the first days. What's missing from the early record rarely gets paid later.

Don't close doors

Don't discard damaged property, don't sign off on scope, and don't accept a first offer before an independent review.

What the record shows

Independent facts — not our claims

Here's what government studies and regulators say about property claims and representation.

State government review of 61,000+ property claims

Typical claim payments were $9,379 with a public adjuster vs. $1,391 without in non-catastrophe property claims, in a state review comparing represented and unrepresented policyholders.

Federal · New York

After Superstorm Sandy, a federal claims review paid over $258 million in additional money to more than 15,000 flood-insurance policyholders — most in New York and New Jersey — after litigation in New York federal court revealed damage reports had been altered to reduce payments.

Common questions

Roof, Wind & Storm Damage claim questions

The carrier says my roof damage is wear and tear, not wind. Now what?
That's the classic storm-claim dispute — and it's frequently winnable with the right documentation: dated photos, weather records for the loss date, and damage patterns consistent with wind. We build that case.
Should I tarp the roof before the adjuster sees it?
Protect the property — that's your duty under the policy — but photograph everything thoroughly first. Emergency tarping is generally a covered cost; keep the invoices.
My building has a flat roof. Does that change the claim?
It changes the scope. Membrane roofs, parapets, and coping fail differently than shingles, and pricing repair or replacement correctly requires understanding those assemblies — most of NYC's housing stock is exactly this.
Do they have to match my existing shingles or finishes?
Matching is a genuine issue: when repairs can't reasonably match, the remedy may be broader replacement. It's policy- and fact-specific, and it's one of the most commonly shorted items on roof claims.
Is the water damage inside covered too?
When wind creates an opening and rain enters through it, the resulting interior damage is generally part of the covered loss — document the opening and the water path together.
I'm a landlord — the storm hit multiple units. Can you handle that?
Yes. Multi-unit storm losses are about organization: per-unit documentation, common-element scope, and one coherent claim. That's our job.
